Missions
Work Area
Our Missions Work Area
touches nearly all of our outreach activities. It oversees our
contributions to many ministries.
While church members cannot do everything, this area enables members to do something, whether it is
donating
money, volunteering time, or praying
for a particular mission. To find out how you can help, contact
Barb Fisher.
The table below shows the mission projects our
church supports. If the mission project
is listed in blue, click on its name to visit its official

Prayer
Ministry
Our
Prayer Ministry has approximately 50 participants via email and 8
via phone call. Requests are primarily sent by email.
Contact Pam Nelson for more information.
Prison
Ministry
Our Prison Ministry collects unused Upper Rooms and leftover Sunday School
material to deliver to the Dauphin
County Prison. It also looks for regular volunteers to perform
Bible Study at the Dauphin County Prison or State
Correctional Institute at Camp Hill. In addition, the Coke
machines in our church profit for the Yokefellowship
Prision Ministry. For more information to volunteer for Bible
Study, contact George Crowther.
Social
Ministry
The
primary purpose of our Social Ministry is to take care of people
in need within our local community. It is a member of the Derry
Township Social Ministry, which is under the Hershey Ministerium
(a group of representatives from all churches in the township).
Each year, our Social Ministry helps 100-160 Derry Township
residents with utility bills and food banks. To donate your food,
money, or time, contact Rebecca Boehmer (533-9436), Jim Stover, Craig Fasnacht, or Clara Hess.
Spring
Creek Nursing Home Group
This
group visits Spring Creek Nursing Home on Tuesdays to help with
the church service and communion. In the past, this group has
arranged for one of our church’s circle groups to help with a
birthday party, our youth group to polish the residents nails,
volunteers to help with the daily coffee hour and a Christmas
angel tree for the residents. To join this group, contact Susan
Mann-Smith.
Stephen
Ministry
Our
Stephen Ministry trains church members to become Stephen Ministers
who can provide one-to-one Christian care to
the bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill, separated, divorced,
unemployed, relocated, and others facing a crisis or life
challenge. A new class is forming in fall 2008. To learn how you can become a Stephen Minister, contact
Pastor Dawes at
533-9668
or David Glassmoyer at 810-1890.
Ukraine
Initiative
Ukraine is a
former member of the Soviet Union which declared its independence
in August, 1991. Since then, the Ukrainian people have struggled
to develop a modern democracy. Chernobyl, Ukraine was the site of
the world’s worst nuclear accident in 1986. The management of
this disaster consumes many of Ukraine’s resources even to this
day. Despite the nation’s lack luster performance in the world’s
marketplace, Ukraine’s people are industrious and clever! They
are very grateful for the help they are given, and they are hungry
to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The
Ukraine Initiative, a ministry of the Central Pennsylvania
Conference, has been working in Bila Tserkva, Ukraine since 1994
and in Kiev, Ukraine since 1998. The Ukrainian Peace Foundation, a
Ukrainian organization similar to our United Way with 27 regional
headquarters, works in close partnership with the Ukraine
Initiative in both of these cities. Through this partnership, a
variety of charitable organizations, such as soup kitchens,
orphanages, senior citizen centers, and homes for special needs
children have received help.
The
Methodist church has been growing in Ukraine. In 2003, the
Ukrainian government recognized it as an “official”
denomination. There are currently 10 Methodist congregations in
the country. This provides new opportunities for partnering with
our Ukrainian brothers and sisters in Christ to serve the people
of Ukraine.
Members
of Hershey First UMC have been supporting the Ukraine Initiative
since its inception in 1994. You can help the people of Ukraine by
sending financial support or by going on a short term mission
trip. For more information contact Beth
Valentine Louder at 533-3931.
Ukriane Mission of Love: A team of twelve people
(including 5 members of First UMC: Darlene Dawes, Sue Edris, Megan
Ginder, Jenny Greene, and Beth Louder) traveled to Bila
Tserkva and Kiev, Ukraine, in January 2005 to celebrate the birth
of our Lord Jesus and share his Love. Click
here to see pictures of the trip and

of the trip. You need the free Adobe
Reader to view.
Love INC
Started by Hershey Ministerium, Love INC (In the Name of Christ), is a network of 8
churches (FUMC included) working together with service agencies to
help our neighbors in need. For more info, see
